Lee Krasner was born in Brooklyn to a family of Russian immigrants. She studied at the Women’s Art School of Cooper Union, then later at the National Academy of Design. In 1934, she was hired as an independent artist by the Public Works of Art Project and took part in the mural division of the Federal Art Project. From 1937 to 1940, she studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts, where her teacher, H. Hofmann, encouraged her choice of a form of lyrical abstraction based on the use of colour, despite her early interest in realist and surrealist painting.
