Plus grand pays producteur de films du monde arabe, l’Égypte a connu très tôt ce que l’on appelait alors le Cinématographe, les premières projections de films courts des frères Lumière ayant eu lieu au Caire dès 1896. Cette singularité de la situation du cinéma en Égypte se retrouve aussi dans les nombreux rôles que les femmes ont joués à différents niveaux de la profession dans l’histoire du cinéma national. Dès l’émergence de ce qui deviendra très vite une industrie extrêmement féconde, elles ne sont pas limitées aux rôles d’actrices mais accèdent également à la production, au scénario et à la réalisation. Pour qui ignore cette histoire, il est étonnant de constater combien le cinéma égyptien des années 1920 a permis et donné aux femmes des fonctions que peu de leurs contemporaines...
