Née dans le Nordeste brésilien, Lucia Mendonça rejoint Rio de Janeiro à l’âge de 5 ans. Elle épouse le Dr José Olvado Previato avec qui elle a deux enfants. Après des études à l’université Santa-Ursula à Rio, elle obtient un doctorat en microbiologie et immunologie. Docteure en 1976, elle fait des études postdoctorales en chimie à Saskatoon, au Canada, sur les hydrates de carbone, où elle lance les grandes lignes de sa recherche...
